They were charged with second-degree murder in the death of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck, a university professor in British Columbia, where the two suspects were also from.

The bodies of Deese and Fowler were found on the Alaska Highway, 470 kilometres from where Dyck's body was discovered on July 19.

RCMP amassed a heavy presence around Gillam after the gray Toyota RAV4 driven by Schmegelsky and McLeod was found in flames on the highway between Gillam and Fox Lake, a small indigenous community to the north, on July 22. He also stated that it's going to be extremely hard to determine what the motive was for the murders and he's hoping the scene where the two bodies were found may have more clues. But investigators later deemed them to be suspects and details surfaced about their use of video games.

The men had managed to cross four provinces in 10 days and had last been confirmed to be in the proximity of Gillam before appearing to disappear without detection.

The RCMP says they have spoken with the victims' family members on the discovery of the two bodies.

"Given now we believe the suspects are deceased it does complicate things for us", she said.

"It's surprising in this day and age with social media what you can find".

What comes next is probably the cause of death, to determine what exactly happened to the two men.
