Because of this fragmentation, Android Q's gestures will be the default gesture navigation for new Android Q+ devices.

When Google introduced the new navigation gestures in the first Android Q Beta there was a lot of outcry over them.

Google Maps is getting new features with a roll-out starting today for both Android and iOS. It blames fragmentation over and above gestures not working for users, the learning curve, and an app's navigation pattern. But given the prolific use of Back, Google ended up taking the hard decision of asking developers to resolve conflicts with the system gestures. This didn't go down too well with many members of the Android community, but with the final release of Q just a few weeks away, Google has told them it's going to stay that way - and what's more, people will like it.

Because this version of the software contains "all of the features, system behaviours, and developer APIs that you'll find in the final platform", app developers will be able to test how their applications will function with the upcoming operating system.

Beta version of Android Q works on Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3XL. The final version also has a sensitivity preference setting for the Back gesture.

The Mountain View company, however, states that a gesture model for system navigation will give users more screen space to interact with. There is a 200dp vertical app exclusion limit for the Back gesture. Google claimed that these changes are "based on user feedback".

"Because it's never a goal to change out behavior on users, we tried several ways to enable users to distinguish the drawer gesture from the Back gesture. Big benefit is that this works with existing apps with "old" DrawerLayout versions". Google has now come out and explained why it needs to fully switch to gesture navigation. The underlying goal was to get updates iterated more quickly. Developers get the latest Android Q system images "for Pixel and Android Emulator, the final API 29 SDK, and updated build tools for Android Studio".
