Bianca Andreescu hailed as 'old soul' in abrupt victory over Serena Williams

The 19-year-old Andreescu has now won 17 consecutive matches, not counting when she has had to retire from matches due to injury herself.

Williams, who was looking to win her first tournament since returning after the birth of her daughter, was down a break in the first set, trailing 3-1, when she could not continue.

Less than a minute later, the chair umpire announced that Williams was retiring from the match, handing Andreescu her second WTA Premier title of the season.

She hugged Williams, one of her tennis idols, comforting the tennis great in what was obviously a painful and hard moment.

There was the memorable 2012 run that saw Aleksandra Wozniak beat former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic and became the first Canadian in 20 years to reach the quarter-finals. I have had many, many tough matches.

Andreescu had been on the court more than any other player at this year's Rogers Cup at 10 hours 54 minutes heading into Sunday's final. She ended on an optimistic tone, saying that despite it being a rough year professionally, she was going to keep going and competing.

Now ranked World No.27, just off of her career-high of No.22, Andreescu will be rewarded for her success with a Top 20 debut in the WTA Rankings on Monday. "I tried but I just couldn't do it", a tearful Williams, who struggled to get the words out, told the crowd.

"But when things happen like that I just try to focus on the tactics and forget about the pain, but it's not easy".

The Canadian starlet picked up three Top 10 wins in the event, beating World No.5 Kiki Bertens and World No.3 Karolina Pliskova before World No.10 Williams's retirement in the final, and now has a stunning 7-0 record against Top 10 players in her career.
