Epstein, 66, was found semiconscious in July in what was reported as an attempted suicide.

The financier was in a cell by himself when his body was found, the source said. Until recently, the same unit had been home to the Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who is now serving a life sentence at the so-called Supermax prison in Colorado.

On 3 July, the Second Circuit ordered that a NY federal court judge should unseal more than 2,000 pages in the Giuffre v Maxwell case, Law360 reported.

Last month, a judge denied Epstein's request to make bail, saying he posed a danger to the public and seemed to still have an uncontrollable urge for sexual conduct with or in the presence of underage girls.

An FBI investigation has also been opened, and Attorney General William Barr later announced a Justice Department probe into Epstein's death, which he also called an "apparent suicide".

The files related to the separate civil case of Giuffre v Maxwell, in which Virginia Giuffre, claimed to have been the USA businessman's teenage "sex slave".

Last month, he was placed on a suicide watch after he was found in the fetal position in his jail cell with marks on his neck.

Some of his accusers and their lawyers are angry that the financier's suicide will prevent him from facing them in court.

He left in 1981 to set up J. Epstein & Co., but one bank executive said he remained close to Cayne and Greenberg and was a client until Bear Stearns' demise.

Before his legal troubles, Epstein led a life of extraordinary luxury that drew powerful people into his orbit.

Epstein and Mitchell did know each other, but there was never any hint that Mitchell was in any way involved in Epstein's sex ring.

He socialized with princes and presidents and lived on a 100-acre private island in the Caribbean and one of the biggest mansions in NY.

Ms Giuffre also alleged she was forced by Epstein into a number of sexual encounters with Prince Andrew when she was 17.

The victim, with Virginia Giuffre, said she was also instructed to have sex with former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Prince Andrew of Britain and other prominent men, the VentureBeat reported on Friday. He previously avoided federal criminal charges in 2008 after prosecutors brokered a widely criticized deal that allowed him to plea to solicitation of prostitution from a minor and serve 13 months in jail.

After Epstein's arrest, prosecutors said a search of his townhouse, conducted under a warrant, uncovered evidence of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of nude photographs of "what appeared to be underage girls", including some photos cataloged on compact discs and kept in a locked safe.

Last month, Alex Acosta resigned as U.S. labor secretary amid a backlash over the deal that he negotiated with Epstein in that case while he was a federal prosecutor in Florida.
