World No. 29 Kenin picked up her third Top 10 win of the season in one hour and 45 minutes, avenging a loss to the Ukrainian in their only prior meeting at Indian Wells earlier this year. The Canadian scored her first break in the opening game, converted on another after holding and broke her opponent's service yet again before serving out the set and screaming "come on!" as she pumped her fist having completed the bagel.

However, the Louny, Czech Republic native would take the second set without much resistance from the underdog Canadian, who also had to take a medical timeout and played through an apparent groin injury.

Kenin also stunned world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the first round of the WTA Tour event.

"Oh my God!" Andreescu screamed in disbelief before eventually surrendering the opening set.

The 19-year-old Andreescu, from nearby Mississauga, advanced to 5-0 against top-10 opponents this year.

Elina Svitolina, the 2017 Rogers Cup victor, moved on with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Katerina Siniakova, and 2015 champion Belinda Bencic edged Julia Goerges 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Andreescu will face American Sofia Kenin in a semifinal of the WTA event on Saturday. On Thursday, she defeated world No. 5 Kiki Bertens.

The 20-year-old Kenin upset top-ranked Barty in the first round.

Andreescu, one of three teenagers playing in third-round singles matches on the day at Aviva Centre, was to follow the Pliskova-Kontaveit match on centre court.

Pakistan bans all cultural exchanges with India, consults China on India's move

"In the third set I told myself, 'Go big or go home,"' Andreescu said. I felt it this morning, too. Halep, who won the 2018 Rogers Cup title in Montreal, needed three sets and a tiebreak to oust 76th-ranked American Jennifer Brady in the second round.

"And today I felt it more, so that's why I chose to retire", said Halep, no doubt exercising extra caution with the final Grand Slam of the year due to start on August 26.

She came jogging back out with a wrap around her right leg and tape on her left inner thigh.

"Achilles problems. I felt since the first match here".

"It's hard not to focus on that when it's hurting at every point", said Andreescu.

Andreescu answered with an ace of her own to tie it up 4-4, then won another game when Pliskova's return on a break point was well past the baseline.

Unlike at Flushing Meadows past year, where Osaka won her first Grand Slam title, there were no fiery exchanges with the umpire, no smashed rackets, no point or game penalties - just a rock-solid performance from Williams.

In the night semifinals, eighth-seeded Serena Williams played No. 2 Naomi Osaka of Japan, and Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova faced fourth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania.

Wimbledon champion Simona Halep of Romania played Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation later Thursday.
