Within seconds, Trejo is seen in a white shirt and black shorts running over to the SUV and kneeling down to try and see who is in the vehicle.

While he's known best for his villainous on-screen actions, Danny Trejo is being hailed as a hero after rescuing a child trapped in an overturned vehicle after a collision in Los Angeles.

Authorities say two cars crashed on Wednesday in the Sylmar neighbourhood. The only unbelievable thing is, since he couldn't get the child's seat belt undone, he actually could have used a machete.

The female bystander, who identified herself as Monica Jackson, then came to his aid.

Los Angeles firefighters freed the baby's grandmother who was trapped in the driver's seat.

Speaking to ABC7, Trejo said: "I couldn't get the baby out". The cause of the crash is still under investigation, the report said.

"If he wasn't wearing his auto seat, I think he would have died", he said.

"He was panicked. I said, "OK we have to use our superpowers.' So he screamed 'superpowers" and we started yelling 'superpowers'".

Trejo reportedly crawled into the totaled vehicle from one side and attempted to free the tot, but couldn't reach the child's auto seat. "I kept facing him away from what was going on".

Three people were hospitalized as a result, but by the time first responders arrived none of the victims needed to be extricated, according to Margaret Stewart with the Los Angeles Fire Department. "I pulled the baby out of the other outside".

Trejo grew up in Los Angeles and made a name for himself for decades by taking up the role of tough guys and villains in blockbusters. "We got kind of, like, a bond, I guess".

The 75-year-old Trejo, an L.A. native, is best known for playing the character "Machete" in the Spy Kids series.
