Pakistan opposition leader Maryam Nawaz, her cousin arrested in corruption case

Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who was arrested by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday, was remanded into NAB's custody till August 21. "Hamza Shehbaz and Maryam Nawaz's arrests prove once again that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is complicit with the National Accountability Bureau", Sharif said, amid uproar from the parliamentarians in attendance. The NAB presented a list of questions to which Maryam had not responded. The NAB had asked Maryam to provide details of her shareholdings in the CSM, details of financial relations with foreign nationals - Saeed Said bin Jabar al Suweidi, a UAE national; Sheikh Zakauddin, a United Kingdom national; Hani Ahmad Jamjoon, a Saudi national; and Naseer Abdullah Lootah, a UAE national.

Maryam had appeared before NAB on July 31 to record her statement in the case.

Some PML-N MPAs submitted their resolutions in the Punjab Assembly. He added that NAB had summoned her twice.

Maryam's arrest sparked off a debate in the National Assembly in Islamabad.

Shahbaz stated that the decision to arrest Maryam in front of her father and children is "extremely shameful".

Asadullah said that suspicious transactions had been carried out in Maryam's bank accounts. The opposition leaders began sloganeering as Asif continued to question the government's methods of accountability. Addressing the opposition, Khan said, "You must explain how you received billions of dollars' worth of foreign currency in court". His two previous governments were dismissed over corruption charges and through a bloodless military coup in 1992 and 1999, respectively.

"Maryam Nawaz has been arrested", Marriyum Aurangzeb, a spokeswoman for Nawaz's Pakistan Muslim League (N) party said.

Ali said, "They are chanting slogans against him today, but a few years, that was not the case".
