Immigrant Communities Brace for Weekend ICE Raids

They are targeting people who have an open deportation order, but have not left the country.

ICE planned to begin this operation last month but that was postponed by the current administration. It is unusual for the government to announce deportation operations ahead of time.

He and other pro-immigration leaders have pushed back against ICE actions, saying they sow distrust and fear among the immigrant communities whether people are here legally or not.

So many stay, put down roots and even start families - which makes for some heart-breaking stories when ICE finally catches up.

Administrative warrants are not the same as a judicial criminal warrant, and lawyers say migrants have the right to refuse entry to a home if ICE only has an administrative warrant.

"They'll be starting fairly soon, but I don't call them raids, we're removing people, all of these people who have come in over the years illegally", Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. "So if word gets out, it gets out".

The operation will focus on families who recently entered the country illegally.

The Trump administration has been trying discourage Central American migrants from making the trip north. Hundreds of thousands of migrants have crossed the southern border this year, many fleeing violence and poverty to seek asylum in the U.S.

Lightfoot joins fellow Democrats in their latest attempt to block the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration across the country.

"'Sanctuary' is the practice of shielding aliens in the United States in violation of law from the reach of federal immigration officers".

Alongside these worldwide efforts, Trump has sought to deter border crossings with highly publicized crack-downs in the United States.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition advised undocumented immigrants to ask those with legal status to drive them where they need to go.

ICE has declined to discuss the weekend's operation, including whether those families are among those being targeted.

Ken Cuccinelli, acting director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, said Wednesday that ICE has court-issued removal orders for around one million people, but acknowledged that it has nowhere near the manpower and facilities capacity to pursue that many.

As a precaution, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said her city has taken steps to ensure that the Chicago Police Department will not cooperate with ICE agents if the raids occur.

They were taking a cue from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also urged people to 'know your rights'.
