Former NASA astronaut Ken Bowersox will take his place as the acting head of human exploration.

Gertenmaier was reassigned as a special assistant to Bridenstine's deputy, Jim Morhard.

In his memo, Bridenstine said the reassignment was in an effort to meet the goal of sending a man and the first-ever woman to the moon within the next five years. "In an effort to meet this problem, I've determined to make management changes to the Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate". The move signifies something of a demotion for Gerstenmaier at the agency.

He has been with the agency since 1977, led some of its most high profile programs and was the head of the human exploration office in a 14-year tenure.

An extended-time NASA veteran, Hill helped manage the growth of the company's new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System, or SLS wanted to hold astronauts again to the moon.

The Democratic chairwoman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology said she was "baffled" by Bridenstine's decision to demote Gerstenmaier without a permanent replacement to fill the role.

In June Bridenstine told CNN Business NASA will need an estimated $20 billion to $30 billion besides NASA's current budget over the next five years for its Artemis moon project.

Gerstenmaier appeared to favor test firing the mammoth rocket's first stage, powered by four upgraded space shuttle main engines, at NASA's Stennis Space Center in MS next year to make sure the booster met its design specifications. "Given NASA is no longer pursuing the new mission directorate, Mark has opted to pursue other opportunities", Bridenstine said in a memo to employees at the time.
