California couple suing fertility clinic that implanted their embryo in another woman

The babies were born on March 31, and Anni said in a press conference on Wednesday that CHA called her and Ashot 11 to 12 days later to come in for a DNA test. Anni claims that the clinic did not inform her why they needed to get tested until they arrived and learned that they may be the parents of a baby boy across the country.

That mix-up led to a woman carrying and giving birth to babies that weren't her own.

In court documents, the Asian-American couple say they spent more than $100,000 (R1.4 million) on in-vitro fertilisation services to fall pregnant, but when they gave birth in March, they were "shocked" to find neither babies was of Asian descent.

Last week, the New York City woman and her husband also sued CHA Fertility, saying doctors there transferred the wrong embryos when they underwent in vitro fertilization a year ago.

In their legal claim, the NY couple said the experience of delivering the babies and then losing them has left them with "permanent emotional injuries from which they will not recover".

As a result, it's impossible to know exactly how often an embryo is implanted in the wrong uterus - especially if the resulting child looks enough like its parents that no one thinks to get a genetic test to be sure.

Mr Wolf said his clients still have no idea whose embryos CHA inserted into Ms Manukyans's uterus.

The second baby boy allegedly comes from egg and sperm of a third, unrelated couple.

The lawsuit says that the couple were victims of an "unimaginable mishap" - so much so that they 'could not find the courage and the way to tell others about their devastating loss'.

Adam Wolf, their attorney, described CHA's misconduct as "extreme and outrageous" and said the lawsuit strives for compensation and accountability. "It was just heartbreaking".

Anni and Ashot Manukyan have spoken out about the twist in IVF mix-up. "Weeks later, Anni and Ashot learned that they had a son, but CHA refused to provide any further information regarding the identity of the NY couple or the whereabouts of their son".

They added that the woman, who is Asian, gave birth months later to two boys who were not Asian nor related to each other.

Yumi Lee, the center's COO, did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

"My baby boy, who wants to meet their child in a lobby of a hotel?" she said.

"It was hard not knowing where your child is", Anni said.

The Manukyans did not learn they had a son until two weeks after he was born, and they had to go through an "expensive" legal battle to obtain custody, the lawsuit said. "It was heartbreaking. It was bad", she sobbed.

The couple, Anni and Ashot Manukyan, who originally had one of the embryos, have now taken custody of one of the children.

"I hope that no one ever has to suffer through what my family has been through and I hope that CHA sees this, understands what it did, stops lying and takes responsibility before even more families are hurt", Anni Manukynan said. One thing most couples assume will go right, however, is that the embryo implanted in the woman will be their own. "CHA put my family through a living hell".
