Williams will be joined in the semi-finals by Elina Svitolina who got past Karolina Muchova in a close affair on Court One which was edged by the Ukrainian (7-5, 6-4).

But Williams, who is hunting down a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title, is tennis tungsten, and recovered superbly from a brief wobble in which she lost the second set and fell a break behind in the third. Serena won 59 percent of his total service points and converted on six of her 16 break points.

For Halep - who aside from Williams was the only player in the quarter-finals to have won a Grand Slam, taking the French Open a year ago - it is her second Wimbledon semi-final.

Ranked 50th in the world, Zheng had never previously won a match at Wimbledon, losing in the opening round five times.

Johanna Konta was angered by a reporter's "patronising" question following her Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to Barbora Strycova.

Nick Kyrgios received two fines for unsportsmanlike conduct: one for $3,000 in the first round and $5,000 in the second round. "I went from playing at the highest level of the sport to really struggling to do day-to-day things", Murray added.

It says a lot about the unpredictability of the women's game that Williams was the only player in the last eight who reached the same stage previous year.

Serena Williams is coming off a three sets win over Alison Riske that took 29 games to decide.

"I still believe in the tennis I play".

Serena Williams and Barbora Strycova meet in the semifinal of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon. "But I try to don't think so much about it any more as I was trying to not think so much about that I couldn't get the win before in quarterfinals". It was a bit of a slow start for the top seeds, however, as they needed three sets to get past Denys Molchanov and Galina Voskoboeva after receiving a bye in the first round. She'll win one point with an old-school serve and volley, and the next with a two-handed backhand drop shot.

Williams was due back on Centre Court later Tuesday to play mixed doubles with Andy Murray.

Strycova has beaten four seeded players in her fairy tale Wimbledon run, and her composure in the quarterfinals was remarkable.

"It's a great week to play Serena and it's a match that I really look forward to playing", said Strycova.

She was handed a penalty of Dollars 10,000 for repeatedly smashing her racket on the court during a second-round match against Christina McHale in 2016.

Konta doesn't like going into big matches as the favourite, and she doesn't like opponents who mess her about with changes of rhythm, pace and spin.
