Hurricane Barry: NOAA releases warning - will tropical disturbance become hurricane Barry?

Once the system becomes better organized, it could push the already swollen Mississippi River precariously close to the tops of levees that protect New Orleans, forecasters said.

There are a few key players in the development of this potential tropical feature - now dubbed "Invest 92L" (short for "investigation area") by the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). Tropical Storm Barry has a near 100 percent chance of forming, AccuWeather forecasters say, and, depending on the track it takes, the storm could flirt with becoming a hurricane before making landfall.

If maximum sustained winds strengthen to 39 to 73 miles per hour, the system becomes a tropical storm.

The Flood Protection Authority said it will be closing several flood gates and structures in the New Orleans area starting Wednesday.

However, if this storm tracks farther to the west into East Texas, our rain chances would need to be adjusted upwards as pockets of heavy rain would become more numerous in nature this weekend.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards on Wednesday declared a state of emergency, warning that up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain could fall on parts of the Gulf Coast state.

Whether it eventually becomes a hurricane or not remains to be seen, but the NOAA has released a storm forecast which warns it might.

Today, tropical storm Barry will bring down scattered showers and some isolated thunderstorms.

Development of tropical storms in near-shore waters off the US coast are common early during hurricane season, in the middle of the summer. PTC Two should form into a tropical depression soon.

"There are a number of petroleum rigs and refineries along the central and western Gulf coast, and there may be considerable risk if this storm ramps up, develops to its full potential and travels in that direction", Sosnowski said.

This storm is drifting west-southwest away from Florida and is forecast to make landfall somewhere on the Louisiana or Texas coast as Hurricane Barry. Warm enough to support the strengthening of a tropical system.
