South Dakota has recorded its first case of human West Nile virus of 2019. He said there is a risk of contracting the virus anytime mosquitoes are active, so it is important to protect yourself from mosquito bites. But common symptoms include fever, headache and body or joint aches or a rash.

About one in five people who are infected with West Nile virus develop a fever and other symptoms. "It is important that residents take steps to protect themselves by using repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers and avoiding the outdoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active".

Many people who have been infected with the illness do not show symptoms, which run the gamut of severity from mild to severe. "Anywhere that collects water can breed mosquitoes, so checking flower pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, and other places can reduce the risk of mosquito bites and the illnesses they can carry".
