The Chicago Police Department released nearly 70 hours of surveillance footage on Monday, including a video showing authorities entering the Empire star's Chicago apartment, where he was found with a rope strung around his neck that he claimed was part of the attack.

The footage was filmed in the ex-Empire actor's Chicago home back in January at 8:45am local time, some seven hours after he was allegedly subjected to a racist and homophoic attack in a nearby street.

In that video footage Smollett - with his face blurred - is seen wearing a white rope that he told detectives his attackers looped around his neck.

Gatson says to the officers: "I just feel like anything like this happened to me, I would want to report it".

Shortly after, he asks the police to switch off their cameras. Prosecutors said Smollett had forfeited his $10,000 bail money and done community service.

Police said he staged the attack with the help of two brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo.

Days after the alleged hate crime incident, Smollett was accused of staging his own attack by investigators.

Chicago police have released hundreds of files from the investigation into Jussie Smollett's claim that he was assaulted by two men.

The officer interviewing him asks if Smollett would like to remove the rope.

But, now a special prosecutor has been assigned to investigate why the charges were suddenly dropped.

"The unprecedented irregularities in this case warrants the appointment of independent counsel to restore the public's confidence in the integrity of our criminal justice system", Cook County Circuit Judge Michael Toomin said.

In April, Jussie Smollett's legal team was sued for defamation by the Osundairo brothers - who said their reputations were damaged by the incident.

The City of Chicago is now suing to recoup the cost of the investigation from Smollett, a figure in the region of £100,000.

On Monday, Smollett's attorneys did not respond to a request for comment.
