Woodland would help lead the Ichabods to their third straight conference title and a trip to Division II NCAA Tournament before leaving. It didn't take long for the two-time state champion, all-state high school hoops player to reconsider his choice. "I thought, 'Yeah, we've got a ballgame now"'.

But his signature moment came at 17 - the same hole where Jack Nicklaus set up a tap-in birdie with a stinging one-iron in 1972 and Tom Watson chipped in 10 years later to deny Nicklaus a fifth US Open title.

Five behind leader and eventual victor Gary Woodland overnight, McIlroy's already slim hopes were extinguished after he double bogeyed the second. The American coolly slotted home a stunning 30-foot birdie on the 18th hole to win the 119th US Open at Pebble Beach by three shots.

"And that's what I really tried to do, is embrace that pressure all day".

The basketball references will stay with Woodland, and that's OK with him. "I was guarding Kirk Hinrich, and was like, 'OK, I need to find something else because this ain't gonna work.' And that was my first game in college". Up ahead, major championship collector Koepka had just missed a birdie putt to tie Woodland at the 15th hole, but he wasn't going away. And I was just trying to get it down there, trying to get it past the hole so I could be putting back uphill, and it came off perfectly. I don't think my game is where it needs to be, but it's getting there.

The pros clearly don't like to be made to look daft and one after another has praised the set-up but the tournament largely lacked the sort of US Open drama I enjoy.

From the first shot to the last, we went step-for-step for the 18-hole bout.

There are eight golf courses at Pebble Beach, the most famous being Pebble Beach Golf Links but it also includes Spanish Bay, Spyglass and Poppy Hills - all public. He went through a 34-hole bogey free stretch at one stage and on the final day, his pars were more impressive than many of his birdies.

Woodland was starting to feel the pressure and dropped his second shot in four holes on the 12th, but then struck what proved to be the vital blow with a stunning approach from 263 yards on the 14th which landed just over the greenside bunker and ran a few inches off the green.

Woodland hit the edge of the green on the par-3 17th all the way to the right, with the pin on the hourglass green on the other side. "I'm becoming a more complete player". But after a magnificent week of golf that touched just about every possible heart string for even the coldest observer, you can't possibly be upset, either.

"My whole life, I've been able to compete and win at everything I've done", he said.

Koepka pulled within one with a birdie at the 11th, giving the shot back at 12 when he failed to get up and down from a bunker. "Outside of being a dad, my only hobby is golf".

"And so when I transitioned to golf the next year, that was the first time in my life I'd ever focused exclusively on golf". So I don't like to take time off. "Obviously whatever I'm doing is working".
