Ortiz, 43, was struck in the back, and "the bullet went through his stomach", Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic National Police, told CNN.

Ortiz was transported to Boston on Monday in an air ambulance the Red Sox arranged.

Shortly after he was shot, Ortiz was taken to Abel Gonzalez Center for Advanced Medicine in Santo Domingo, where he underwent his first surgery. He suffered damage to his liver, colon, and his gallbladder, earlier reports said.

On Monday, Ortiz's representative Leo Lopez denied that the shooting had anything to do with a woman but said it was the act of "hired" killers.
