Indians’ Terry Francona On David Ortiz: ‘He’s A Very Special Person’

The Boston Red Sox have sent an air ambulance to the Dominican Republic to fly former Major League Baseball all-star David Ortiz to a U.S. hospital after he was shot and wounded in his hometown.

Ortiz's father says his son is out of danger and that the bullet did not hit any major organ.

"They called me to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center", Ortiz's father told ESPN.

The 43-year-old former player was shot by a man who jumped off a motorbike outside the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo at about 8:50 in the evening. He hit 541 career home runs, made 10 All-Star teams and won three World Series titles with Boston. "We ask for privacy as David works toward recovery".

Ortiz, known also as "Big Papi", was honored by Boston, with baseball fans praying for a full recovery.

Dominican television host Jhoel Lopez and another person were also wounded in the attack, according to The Associated Press. Lopez's wife, Lisa Blanco, said his injuries are not life-threatening.

The man then produces a firearm and shoots Ortiz in the back from close range.

"They talk about superheroes without capes and he's a superhero without a cape", Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who a former teammate of Ortiz's in Boston, said during a pregame news conference.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Kennedy reflected on the role Ortiz played after the Boston Marathon bombings, when he delivered his famous speech at Fenway Park.
