Strong winds caused the crane to fall onto the Elan City Lights apartment building, located at 2627 Live Oak St.

"Right now our number one priority is the living area on the eastern-most side of the building where it appears that all five stories at some point inside the structure have collapsed", Evans said. The National Weather Service said the region spanning Texas Hill Country and Dallas Forth Worth is experiencing severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and even tornados.

"The building itself has suffered multiple collapses in different include residential spaces and the parking garage", Dallas Fire Rescue official Jason Evans said.

Evans says that one woman was killed when the crane fell on the building, and five other people were taken to hospitals with injuries.

Several vehicles had also been damaged by the impact.

Dallas Fire and Rescue confirmed to CBS News two rescues occurred.

Video of the area's severe weather and the crane falling was captured from afar. "We only hope that the damage that's been inflicted thus far is where it stops", he added.

Describing when the crane fell, "It just sliced through the building ... like a hot knife through butter".

Apartment management on Sunday evening were still working to account for all residents, but there were no reports of missing people, Evans said.

"We don't quite know if our auto is there, we haven't been able to get into our apartment to see if it's OK or to see if there's any damage", she told CNN.

The highest recorded gust in the area was 71 miles per hour at Dallas Love Field, according to the National Weather Service, though winds were likely higher at the elevation where the crane was on top of the building.

The body of a woman, who was not identified by officials, was found inside the building after the collapse, fire officials said.
