Iowa officials say a dog breeding facility in the central part of the state has been linked to canine brucellosis - a zoonotic disease that can be transferred to humans.

The disease originated from a small dog-breeding facility in Marion County, Iowa, and both the animals and the building in question are now being quarantined while the pups undergo clinical testing.

"Both the animals and the facilities are quarantined while the dogs undergo clinical testing", the statement from the The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship continues.

Infection with this bacteria leads to reproductive problems among the dogs with major symptoms including infertility, stillbirths and spontaneous abortions seen in the dogs says the Iowa Department of Public Health. Infections cause flu-like symptoms-including fever and back pain-as well as joint pain. It is also recommended that dog owners who have "recently acquired a new, small breed dog from Marion County" contact a veterinarian and their own physician. "We went on to notify all of the individuals that we know purchased dogs", Coppess says.

Heinz said they had to quarantine their adoption building for an additional 30 days.

Brucellosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted to humans and other animals through contaminated reproductive fluids. This bacterial infection is highly contagious between dogs. "Infected animals can live for at least 16 months before dying, and their blood, tissues, and fecal material can remain a source of new infections for years after death", said the University of Minnesota on its website.

"This is just one more reason to ADOPT and not SHOP!" the organization added. They also suggest that all animals that tested positive for the infection need to be quarantined, and either through "spayed/neutered or euthanasia". "Please pray for our sweet babies that were finally getting the chance to have a happy life", the group wrote.
