A top U.S. prosecutor has been chosen by William Barr, the attorney-general, to review the origins of the investigation into Russian links with President Trump's campaign.

Some Republicans have alleged that the FBI-Mueller probe was sparked by a dossier penned by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele at the behest of private investigators working for the Democratic Party. While speaking to reporters outside of the White House Tuesday, the president said the investigation proved there was no collusion even after special counsel Robert Mueller employed "18 angry people".

President Donald Trump and some other Republicans have called for a special counsel to "investigate the investigators" after special counsel Robert Mueller's report found that the president's campaign did not collude with Russian Federation to influence the 2016 presidential election.

"I am so proud of our attorney general that he is looking into it", Trump said, "I think it's great". I am not suggesting those rules were violated, but I think it is important to look at that.

Durham, the USA attorney in CT, will conduct the inquiry, a source told Fox News Monday.

Durham was nominated by Trump in 2017 and has served as a lawyer within the Justice Department for almost 40 years, according to the Times.

President Trump nominated Durham, a Department of Justice attorney since 1982, to be the U.S. Attorney in CT in 2017.

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions also appointed Utah U.S. Attorney John Huber to review whether political bias tainted decision making in the Justice Department and FBI in 2016, including with regard to the Page warrant and the investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Durham specializes in investigating potential wrongdoing by national security officials. Huber, the USA attorney in Utah, is also examining aspects of the Russian Federation investigation.

Durham, who has been with the Department of Justice since 1982, has led high-profile investigations such as a probe into the FBI's handling of informant and organized crime leader Whitey Bulger and the investigation into the CIA's destruction of videos allegedly showing torture of terrorism suspects.
