Day was one of the hottest entertainers in Hollywood, with her heyday spanning the 1940s to the 1960s.

Stella McCartney, an English fashion designer and daughter of Beatles musician Paul McCartney, wrote that Day was an "iconic woman" she was honored to have met.

Doris Day, an actress and singer whose career and activism endured from the 1930s, has died, according to multiple sources. A statement by the Doris Day Foundation revealed that the actress "had been in excellent physical health for her age" but had recently contracted "a serious case of pneumonia". She was 97 years old.

This isn't an attempt at a standard obituary. "I love to laugh", said the star who made so many others laugh and sing.

Doris married four times and had a son, Terrence, with her first spouse Al Jorden, who was later adopted by her third husband, the late Martin Melcher, but he died in 2004. Her brand of beauty came sprinkled with freckles. She then went to television with "The Doris Day Show" which ran for five seasons and 128 episodes from 1966-1973. Among her popular films were "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" and "The Pajama Game", and she became well known for the Oscar-winning song "Que Sera, Sera".

One of Hollywood's last Golden Age stars has passed away. They transcended their performances, becoming people who represented America at its best.

During her 14-month recovery, she took singing lessons and modeled her voice on what she called the "casual yet clean" style of Ella Fitzgerald.

The chaste screen persona seemed at odds with her private life. Speaking in 2015, Day said she still missed her co-star. She remained for several years one of the country's top box-office draws. She had her first hit recording, "Sentimental Journey", with the group, in 1944.

Day's life was not always as sunny as her movie roles. Day's version has everything delightful about her voice and personality, though, and I can't help but thinking this is a flawless memory of her today.

With Brown, Day recorded such early favorites as "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" and "You Won't Be Satisfied (Until You Break My Heart)". Thank you for all the joy you brought us, and may sunbeams carry worries far, far behind you now.

Nevertheless, Day considered herself "blessed".
