More immediately, she found she had been committed to a weekly TV series she did not wish to do, but made the best of it, carrying "The Doris Day Show" (1968-1973) through five uneven seasons.

Doris Day, the USA screen icon famed for her wholesome, girl-next-door appeal in a string of box office hits, died Monday at age 97, her foundation said in a statement to United States media.

Day "had been in excellent physical health for her age" but had recently contracted pneumonia, the foundation said in a statement.

Legendary Hollywood actress and singer Doris Day has passed away, aged 97.

Born in Cincinnati in 1922 as Doris Mary Ann Kappeloff, Day had dreams to become a professional dancer, until an injury in a vehicle crash hurt her chances of breaking into that business.

Born Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she began her career at the young age of 15, and worked for almost three decades in film, largely starring in musical-comedies.

"Her 39 films - many still incredibly popular and shown frequently today - stand as a testament to her talent", her foundation said. Day was an accomplished singer, winning a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers.

The league continues to lobby on behalf of animal rights, while the foundation operates as a hands-on animal welfare charity. Though remembered most often for her frothy, delightful "sex comedies" of the early 1960s - a genre she all but invented and were indeed both innocent and, for the time, racy - Day proved more than once that she could handle serious drama. Her brand of beauty came sprinkled with freckles. She had her second hit with "My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time" and then signed a contract with Columbia Records, going solo, in 1947. Listening to the radio while recuperating, she began singing along with Ella Fitzgerald, "trying to catch the subtle ways she shaded her voice, the casual yet clean way she sang the words".

"You gotta give her credit, the girl can sing", preens Snyder (James Cagney) as she performs the song in the film.

She had one child, music producer Terry Melcher by her third husband, but he sadly died from melanoma in 2004.
