The subpoena for Trump Jr.'s testimony marks an escalation of the Senate Intelligence Committee's probe into Russian election interference. "It's time to move on & start focusing on issues that matter to Americans". "I have no difficulty with bipartisanship, but to subpoena the president of the United States son and not at least get a heads-up, I thought was - let's say bad form". It's the first known subpoena of a member of President Donald Trump's immediate family, and a new sign that the Senate panel is continuing with its own Russian Federation investigation even after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on the same subject.

Those close to Trump are exasperated that Republican Sen.

In a statement provided to Newsweek, a spokesperson for the Senate intelligence committee said: "We do not discuss the details of witness engagements with the Committee".

The subpoena from the Republican-led committee comes after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said its time to call "case closed" for the investigations on Russian Federation. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) also lashed out at the Committee for being out of step with the McConnell "memo".

"I'm assuming that they believe they can - if you can believe this, they are going to take Cohen's word".

The committee's subpoena seemed to catch much of the press unaware, with news of its existence coming as reporters followed another hearing across Capitol Hill, where the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee was preparing to vote to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a committee subpoena for the entire, unredacted Mueller report. "Let's work together to help POTUS move USA forward", Rep. Specifically, the committee wants to ask President Donald Trump's eldest son about his knowledge of a failed deal to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

After the release of Mueller's report, the White House began to actively fight back the Democrat-led inquiries. The White House has also asserted executive privilege to prevent former White House counsel Don McGahn from testifying. The House tax-writing committee is in a standoff with the Treasury Department over a request for Trump's tax returns.
