Construction teams brought in a huge crane and a delivery of planks of wood to the site this morning after French president Emmanuel Macron set a five-year deadline to restore the 12th-century landmark.

A plan to safeguard the masterpieces and relics inside was quickly put into action once the alert was raised.

Some of the works were being transferred from City Hall to the Louvre, where they will be dehumidified, protected and eventually restored. Any salvageable paintings would also be removed by Friday and sent to the museum, he added. Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said pieces of the purported Crown of Christ was salvaged and transported to "a secret" location.

But Mr Philippe posed the question of "whether we should even recreate the spire as it was conceived by [French architect] Viollet-le-Duc. or if, as is often the case in the evolution of heritage, we should endow Notre-Dame with a new spire". He added that workers were "surveying the movement" of the structure and the contents in it.

Authorities consider the fire an accident. "We got a cathedral back and we're glad to have it", he said.

"The priority is always to prevent fire in the first place, by using professional buildings services specialists to carry out electrical and hot works [any works that could cause fire] and having regular inspections".

Paris prosecutor Rémy Heitz laid out a timeline in which an alarm went off at 6:20 p.m., but no evidence of fire was found. The second alert was sounded at 1643 GMT (6:43 pm) and a blaze was discovered in the roofing at that point.

News that the fire was probably accidental has done nothing to ease the national mourning.

Those statues had been fixed to the cathedral in the mid-19th century when the spire had been built to replace the original 13th-century one that had been dismantled in the late 18th century because of weather damage.
