The Dalai Lama has been taken to hospital in the Indian capital with a chest infection.

The Dalai Lama, born Tenzin Gyatso in 1935, became the 14th person to hold the position of spiritual leader of the people of Tibet after being enthroned in 1940 when he was just five years old.

The spiritual leader, who had returned to Dharamsala on Monday after meeting with youth global leaders in New Delhi on April 7 was brought to Delhi after he complained of discomfort.

"Let me be very clear - the United States Congress will never recognise a Dalai Lama that is selected by the Chinese", Gardner said. The Tibetan government-in-exile, based here, is not recognised by any country. It is given to those deemed to be the reincarnation of a line of revered religious teachers.

Numerous up to 100,000 Tibetans living in India are anxious that their fight for a genuinely autonomous homeland would end with the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight the Tibetans' struggle for greater freedom in China.
