The city of Chicago is getting ready to take Jussie Smollett to court in an effort to recoup the Chicago Police Department's overtime costs that piled up during its investigation of the alleged hate crime he reported.

"The Law Department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in Circuit Court of Cook County", Bill McCaffrey, a spokesman for the agency, said. "Once it is filed, the Law Department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr. Smollett's L.A. based legal team". The Law Department will file the suit in the near future.

The City of Chicago is well within their rights to ask for three times the actual cost of the investigation which amounts to $390K.

Michelle Obama's former top aide was in contact with the prosecutor in Jussie Smollett's case, weeks before a grand jury indicted the Empire actor on 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly making false reports on February 20.

The city notified Smollett's attorneys by letter last week of its demand that he pay $130,106 - the cost of the police overtime hours expended in the investigation into his allegations.

CBS journalist Charlie De Mar shared a letter from the city of Chicago to Mr Smollett on his Twitter page, demanding he pay $130,106.15 (£99,000) in the next seven days.

Throughout the last couple of months, Smollett has maintained that he is a victim and has denied all allegations against him.

Chicago police have been unhappy with Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx following the dropped charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett in March. Previously, they declined to comment on the letter and referred CNN to a statement that said outgoing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson should apologize to Smollett. "It is the Mayor and the Police Chief who owe Jussie - owe him an apology - for dragging an innocent man's character through the mud", the statement read.

Us Weekly reports that Jussie agreed to pay his bond in exchange for all of the dropped charges.

Additionally, Smollett's attorney, Patricia Brown Holmes, also accused Chicago officials of carrying out a smear campaign against her client.

It's not just that Foxx dropped the charges against Smollett, it's that she failed to notify the police chiefs. "The facts are clear".

"This has been an incredibly hard time and one of the worst of my entire life". "Honestly one of the worst of my entire life". Currently, the FBI is investigating the case to see if there was wrongdoing.
