Ontario Power Generation CEO once again tops Sunshine List

The disclosure act applies to the provincial government, Crown agencies and corporations, Ontario Power Generation and subsidiaries, publicly funded organizations, such as hospitals, school boards, universities and colleges and not-for-profit organizations that meet a funding threshold.

The list is a public disclosure of all public sector employees receiving a salary of $100,000 or more.

Over 151,000 people are on the latest list, up from over 131,000 workers on the list the previous year, including an OC Transpo driver who earned over $200,000 last year and an Ottawa firefighter who made more than the city's fire chief.

That number may include severance, but a spokesman for the Ontario Liberal Party declined to answer when reached for clarification.

Daren Smith, chief investment officer for the University of Toronto Asset Management Corp., captured the No. 2 spot on this year's list, taking home about $989,000 in 2018.

By comparison, Dean French - Premier Doug Ford's chief of staff - earned just over $153,000.

OPG's former chief nuclear officer, Glen Jager, again ranked third, pocketing an annual salary of $962,749.44 - a raise of over $104,000 from past year.

Hospital chief executive officer Pierre Ozolins again topped the entire list for the City of Elliot Lake public earners with a salary of $190,984.99.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath said Ontario taxpayers should prepare themselves for what the list is going to look like next year.

Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit is listed to have a salary of $311,498, with $5,409 in taxable expenses claimed.

Since he didn't become premier until June 29, Ford was paid $112,770 past year by taxpayers. He was among the top 25 highest salaries in the province.
