The world's second-most most valuable technology company lifted the curtain on a television and movie streaming service called Apple TV+ that will stream television shows and movies - both Apple originals and those from other creators - to users of its 1.4 billion gadgets worldwide, smart TVs and other devices. Apple is unveiling it at an event on Monday (US time) at its Cupertino, California headquarters.

During an onstage video montage, Apple showed snippets of several graphically-impressive games now in development for Apple Arcade, which appeared to cover a large swath of different genres, from puzzles to adventure. Pricing was not announced. The pitch is this: Apple Arcade is "the world's first game subscription service for mobile, desktop and the living room".

But, Apple's Senior Vice President Eddy Cue has made clear that the company is not interested in licensing sports content right now.

The Arcade will be a new tab on the App Store, and anyone with a subscription will be able to download games and play them immediately. The show, based on the sci-fi magazine that first inspired Spielberg as a kid, originally ran for 45 episodes between 1985 and 1987 - and will be making a comeback in the future on Apple TV+. And the service's multi-device support extends to letting iOS gamers suspend an Apple Arcade game on their phone, then resume playing it on another device, or vice versa. In other words, if you've already got an iPhone or an iPad, and use iTunes and iMessage, odds are you'd be inclined to go with a new streaming service if it fits in seamlessly with your other stuff. The service will be available this fall in more than 150 countries.

There is a special Apple Show Time event scheduled for today.
