Daily Cannabis Use May Up Risk for Developing Psychotic Disorder

What is more, daily users of high potency cannabis were more likely to have a psychotic disorder, compared with never-users, than those who used low-potency cannabis every day.

Robin Murray, a professor at the IoPPN who also worked on the study, said it should be noted by all policymakers and any potential cannabis users.

In Amsterdam, an estimated 5 in 10 new cases of psychosis are linked with high potency use; in London, an estimated 3 in 10 new cases are linked with high potency use.

While speaking to CNN, Dr. Maria Di Forti, lead author of the study, said that these findings do not immediately mean that high-potency cannabis is directly linked to psychotic breaks, adding that further research is required to make a conclusion.

But NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said it would be "premature at best, and sensational at worst" to conclude a causal relationship exists between marijuana use and psychiatric disorders.

Taking any version of the drug on a daily basis was found to triple the chances of developing psychosis.

David Nutt, head of the centre for neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, said it was "important to realise that THC is well known to produce psychosis in healthy volunteers - people without a predisposition to mental illness". These varieties also contain very little cannabidiol (CBD), a substance that might protect against psychosis.

Although inconclusive, the study has significant implications for mental health services and public health. She's a research fellow with King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.

The researchers then asked those diagnosed with psychosis as well as a group of more than 1,200 healthy people about their weed habits-things like if they used weed, how often, and what kind.

For daily use of high-potency cannabis, this increased to five times.

In those cities, strong pot is widely available. High potency strains are those with THC concentration above 10 percent.

This was second only to Amsterdam, which would see a 50 per cent fall.

Researchers said if high potency cannabis were no longer available, the incidence of psychosis in London would be expected to drop from 45 to 31 cases per 100,000 people per year.

"What this paper has done that's really nice is they look at rates of psychosis and cannabis use in lots of different places where underlying rates of psychosis are different", says Suzanne Gage, a psychologist and epidemiologist at the University of Liverpool, who wrote a commentary linked to the study in The Lancet Psychiatry.

Legalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use made it increasingly available worldwide.

"Maintaining cannabis prohibition, unfortunately, achieves neither result", he concluded.
