Trump vetoes measure that threatened his border wall plans

Trump called the resolution reckless and said he was proud to veto it. "I thank all of the Strong Republicans who voted to support Border Security and our desperately needed WALL!"

Just after the Senate vote, Mr Trump tweeted: "VETO!"

It is not believed there are enough votes to override the president's veto, which would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

The veto would be the first of Donald Trump's presidency.

Trump expressed pride in the Republicans who did not vote to support the resolution and said later that he had sympathy for those who defied him, adding they did what they had to do.

After Trump signed the expected veto, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the body planned to vote for a veto on March 26 on overriding Trump's move.

Trump is seeking a total of $8 billion for his wall: $1.375 billion approved by Congress, $600 million from the Treasury Department's drug forfeiture fund, $2.5 billion from the Defense Department's drug interdiction efforts and roughly $3.5 billion from Department of Defense military construction. "House Republicans will have to choose between their partisan hypocrisy and their sacred oath to support and defend the Constitution". Last month, roughly 76,000 people tried, including 43,000 children and family members, many fleeing violence and poverty in Central America.

The renegade conservatives had condemned the emergency declaration for setting up a risky precedent for a president while emphasising that they still agreed with Mr Trump's tough border security policies. Democrats deny there is an emergency at the border, saying border crossings are at a four-decade low.

It still faces several legal challenges from Democratic state attorneys general and environmental groups who argue the emergency declaration was unconstitutional. He explained the legality of Donald Trump's countermeasure.

"I think actually a national emergency was designed for a specific objective like this, so we have a great case", Trump said. "They shouldn't even be suing, but they will because they always do".
