Liverpool owner John Henry is getting stick from some fans for his post-victory tweet.

Van Dijk will be expected to retain his spot in the starting XI against the Cottagers and Johnson believes he has mastered the art of defending.

After the last-16 first leg ended goalless at Anfield, five-times European champions Liverpool took control in Munich, bossing the game and nullifying their German opponents to become the fourth English team into the last eight.

The Senegal forward scored twice on Wednesday to fire Liverpool to a 3-1 win away to Bayern Munich, earning them a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

"The first goal was ridiculous really, how he finished it off, the calmness and the finish".

The 27-year-old was imperious in defence, too. He was the orchestrator in Munich and looked like a teenager playing among 10-year-olds, so comfortable was he on the ball.

Van Dijk played for FC Groningen in the Eredivisie between 2010 and 2013, taking on Ajax four times, winning one and losing three, before another two meetings with the Dutch giants while at Celtic, with one win and one loss.

And Van Dijk's statistics reflect his mighty European outing. Liverpool got precisely what they paid for: the best.

His quality shined even more in contrast to Bayern's defensive pairing of Mats Hummels and Niklas Sule. Van Dijk possesses all of the strengths of Hummals and Sule but none of the weaknesses, and he did not give Lewandowski an inch of space all night.

Secondly there is no joy in the other English teams being there.

"Virgil gives organisation on set pieces, and he is risky", Klopp said with some understatement. "He is still young enough to get better".

His record comes after an wonderful campaign last season in which he scored 10 Champions League goals, including one in the final against Real Madrid.

The vice-captain, who has played 38 times in the Champions League proper over spells with City and Liverpool, suggested none of the Premier League sides would be looking to play each other at this stage.
