Nine dead, including 5 children, in shooting; 17 others also shot

Among the dead were five school children, one adult who worked at the building, one person who was standing just outside the school and the two adolescent shooters, police said.

Sao Paulo governor Joao Doria said on Twitter the "children were cruelly murdered".

The deadly incident occurred on in the city of Suzano located in the southeastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

- Two young men, wearing hoods and carrying firearms and other weapons, opened fire at a school in southern Brazil on Wednesday, killing eight people before taking their own lives, authorities said.

Brazil's new President Jair Bolsonaro recently announced that gun ownership controls would be loosened. "I only left when the police arrived".

Police say they found a revolver, a bow and arrow and items that appeared to be explosives inside.

Aged between 20 and 25 years old, the alleged attackers are not believed by police to be former students of the school that has some 1,000 primary and secondary students.

Despite strict weapon laws, gun crime is rampant in Brazil, yet school shootings are a rare occurrence.

"Then a lot of kids started running out, all screaming", he said.

Nine others were wounded in the school attack and hospitalized, he said.

In April 2011, a former pupil killed a dozen school children and injured many more before turning his gun on himself at a school in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.

"We can't let those who take advantage of this tragedy speak about how disarmament is the solution", he tweeted, adding: "Weak and shameful 'disarmament farce, ' which gave guns to criminals and prevented self-defence".

The attack was carried out by two "armed and hooded" teenagers, according to police. "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
