Beckham, though, was pranked before appearing at the statue unveiling ceremony inside the Galaxy's stadium in front of fans ready for their season opener.

The real statue is a classy tribute Beckham in an unmistakable pose, as if about to strike a trademark free-kick, commemorating his achievements as a two-time MLS Cup victor and his history-defining presence in Major League Soccer.

The Los Angeles Galaxy will be honoring David Beckham with a statue placed outside of the stadium, as the artwork is months in the making.

Unbeknown to Beckham, the exclusive reveal had been hijacked by his friend James Corden, host of "The Late Late Show" on American TV, whose props team built an altogether less flattering version of the actual sculpture.

Chris Klein, one of Beckham's former LA Galaxy teammates and club president, was in on the prank as a video package of Beckham's Galaxy highlights showed some of his lowlights, too.

"It's slightly different than it was when I saw it in Chicago", Beckham said as the ugly effigy was revealed. "I mean, look at my chin". "Look how long my arms are". It doesn't really look nothing like me. The only thing that's good is that hair.

A forklift operator accidentally tipped the fake statue over, sending it crashing to the ground.

And soon after Beckham admitted "you've probably done me a favour there", the ecstatic Corden burst out to end his mate's misery.

It's not until Corden comes running out to inquire into the crash that Beckham finally realizes he's been had, breaking into a defeated smile and hugging the bestie who bested him.
