U.S. Olympic cyclist, Minnesota native Kelly Catlin dies at 23

Olympic track cyclist Kelly Catlin died of an apparent suicide on Friday, the Associated Press reports.

Charlie Townsend, coach of Twin Cities-based NorthStar Development Cycling, said Catlin's death was "confusing and overwhelming" to those who knew her.

"There isn't a minute that goes by that we don't think of her and think of the wonderful life she could have lived", Mark wrote to VeloNews. "The hurt is unbelievable", Catlin's father Mark wrote in an email to Velo News.

She also won gold medals with the team at the 2016, 2017 and 2018 world championships.

Catlin was pursuing a master's in Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford, after graduating with bachelor's degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Chinese from the University of Minnesota in 2018.

He said, "T$3 he entire cycling community is mourning this vast loss".

"We are deeply saddened by Kelly's passing, and we will all miss her dearly", DeMartini wrote. "This is an incredibly hard time for the Catlin family and we want to respect their privacy while they support each other". "And things still slip through the cracks", she wrote. Her family confirmed that she committed suicide last week.

"I always saw myself as the planner and she was the doer", Colin told the Post. "Being a graduate student, track cyclist, and professional road cyclist can instead feel like I need to time-travel to get everything done". She also excelled at the violin and as an artist.

"Just a week or two ago, we were making plans and I was optimistic about her future", Colin Catlin said. "... After all, I somehow make everything work, right?" The three-time world champion was 23. "It's just that a lot of them hit the floor and not me", she wrote. She often tweeted about playing violin and was very dedicated to music. While it's unclear if she was still working at the facility at the time of her death, she started working there in 2010, according to LinkedIn.
