Three letter bombs arrived at London transportation hubs on Tuesday: one at a building on the grounds of Heathrow Airport, one at City Centre Airport and one at Waterloo train station.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson, of Police Scotland, said: "There are similarities in the package, its markings and the type of device that was recovered in Glasgow to those in London". A cordon was put in place and some buildings were evacuated until it was determined the package "posed no risk".

All the devices were judged to be viable, and in one instance, the package burst into flames when staff opened it.

Police were dealing with multiple reports of suspicious packages in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, a day after three improvised explosive devices were discovered at London transport hubs.

"Therefore, we are now treating it as being linked to the three packages being investigated by the Met in London and both investigations are being run in tandem".

"Scary stuff, guy just came shouting we needed to evacuate as suspicious package found then the police were shouting at us to move away from the building".

British police have been called to deal with a suspicious package which was found near an entrance to Britain's parliament on Wednesday.

"The package in Glasgow was identified by alert staff at the university mailroom who had received protective security information advising them to be vigilant and to report suspicious packages". Officers are keeping an "open mind" about motive.

Police received reports of the suspicious package at around 12.30pm on Thursday and an emergency response made its way to the scene.

They were posted from the Republic of Ireland, according to a senior European government source, and Ireland's police service is also helping the investigation.

Police in Ireland are assisting the Met with their investigation as Irish postage stamps were on some of the packages.

"We are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry".
