"After much review, we came to the decision to discontinue our pop-up kiosk program", an Amazon spokeswoman said.

Amazon did not say when the pop-up shops would shut down, but the Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported that they will shutter at the end of April. These stores are can be found in mall kiosks, or inside other stores such as Whole Foods and Kohl's, and primarily sell technology such as tablets, e-readers, and Echo and Alexa devices.

The announcement confirms Amazon's goal to strengthen its real-world presence with more, larger physical outlets. The company two years ago acquired Whole Foods Market and the organic grocer's more than 460 locations.

While the opportunity to test drive a Kindle at an Amazon pop-up may be coming to a close, Amazon bookstores will still offer a chance to check out their newest reading technology, along with printed books, toys, games, and more.

"We do not believe these will be successful, as the company lacks expertise in physical retail fulfillment", the analysts wrote of Amazon's plans for physical Books and 4-star shops.

Amazon, the giant online retailer, is closing all 87 of its U.S.

The company also operates bookstores, cashierless Amazon Go-branded convenience stores and a new franchise that stocks a potpourri of items with positive reviews on Amazon's online retail site, called Amazon 4-star.

The closures show how Amazon is continuing to experiment with physical store formats and hasn't yet landed on the ideal fit. Keep an eye on your inbox.
