The Chinese tech giant is going as far as calling its foldable phone "the world's fastest foldable 5G phone". "The HUAWEI Mate X will be the first key for consumers to open the door to 5G smart living", said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei CBG.

The South Korean firm Samsung revealed nearly five weeks ago their foldable smartphone screen, the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the rival firms have contrasting designs. Unlike Samsung's inward folding large display and separate, smaller secondary screen, the Mate X has a single 8-inch OLED panel that wraps around the outside of the device. That's a huge jump up from the 4.6-inch exterior cover screen on the Galaxy Fold, which is the only screen you can use when Samsung's bendy phone is closed.

Look, no big ugly bezels! That was really the biggest down point of the Galaxy Fold, making the device look really odd when folded.

Huawei presented several other products at the same event, including a new range of laptops: such as the MateBook X Pro, which has a 13.9, 3K screen, as well as MateBooks with 13 and 14 inch screens.

There's a new foldable phone in town and it is a beauty.

Huawei here has opted for a novel asymmetric design where one half of the screen is narrower than the other one. We see an individual use the phone's expansive 7.3-inch display to conduct a video call, and flip the device open while browsing Google Maps to get a wider view, with the help of the handset's App Continuity feature. However, it could also be a reference to a 4G LTE Note variant, since 5G technology won't exactly be ubiquitous by year's end. Think of it like a rolled-up magazine. What this boils down to is that the Mate X is ready for the next-generation mobile broadband. A 1GB movie can be downloaded in three seconds. It comes with up to 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage.

The Huawei device sports a 4,500mAh dual battery with several industry-first features including a new superfast charging capability that claims to reach 85 per cent battery in just 30 minutes.

There are no camera bumps on this phone and the fingerprint sensor is directly on the power button.

Samsung Fold and Mate X have adopted different folding ways to fold their screens. For example, this new device apparently bears the model number SM-N975F.

United Kingdom pricing is yet to be officially announced for the Galaxy Fold, but in the rest of Europe it will cost 2,000 euros (£1,738).
