Oppo's telephoto camera lens is able to achieve its 10x lossless zoom compared to other smartphone cameras (typically up to 3x optical zoom) because of an unusual periscope-style module within the smartphone's body that increases the physical depth required for optical zoom. Apart from demoing the new hybrid zoom technology, Oppo has also confirmed that it will showcase its 5G Landing Project plans, featuring leaders of telecommunication from around the globe.

With the announcement today, Oppo is joining Samsung, which announced the Galaxy S10 5G in San Francisco early this week and Huawei, which is expected to introduce a foldable 5G smartphone at an event tomorrow.

Oppo has announced a 5G partnership with telcos from Australia and Switzerland ahead of industry trade show Mobile World Congress, which starts on Monday (Feb 25).

Oppo's event in Barcelona wrapped up a short while ago, and from that event, we now know all the lovely details of the 10x "Lossless zoom" that a new triple-camera setup will be bringing to a phone being released this spring by the company. The solution behind the tech includes a 48-megapixel hi-resolution primary camera, accompanied by a 120-degree ultra-wide sensor and a telephoto lens. The brand has partnered with four European telecom operators including Swisscom, Telstra, Optus, and Singtel for its 5G smartphone.

From squinting really hard at the video, our guess is that this won't be the same phone with 10x optical lossless zoom that was announced at the same conference.

Back in MWC 2017, Oppo had showcased its 5X Hybrid Zoom technology, although the company did not use a commercial device in showcasing the technology. When combined, this camera setup is capable of shooting images at different focal lengths ranging from 16mm to 160mm. "Innovation is our top priority and we have made many recent developments to bring the future into consumer's hands".
