Newborn found abandoned in middle of road amid freezing temperatures in California

A California Highway Patrol officer holds a newborn baby who was found on a road.

Aurelio Fuentes, who found the infant, said he heard her crying and screaming.

Fuentes described the "awful, chilling, moment" he was approaching a customer's house in his vehicle and saw something white moving in the road, which he initially thought was an animal.

A newborn baby in the USA has been rescued after she was found abandoned in the middle of the road with her umbilical cord still attached.

A newspaper carrier discovered the infant lying in the middle of a Madera County road just after 4 a.m., according to a news release from the CHP's Central Division Office. She was dressed in a soiled onesie during weather that was just below 30 degrees. "OK, you know, this is a baby".

Authorities arrived and took the baby to a local hospital.

The sheriff's office reports she was taken to Valley Children's Hospital where she is being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Authorities are seeking the mother. "She was cold but was found soon enough, likely in only a matter of minutes, and is expected to make a full recovery".

According to Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue, a man was walking or jogging eastbound on Avenue 13 1/2 when he was approached by a Hispanic female in her early 20s driving a white, smaller SUV.

"The man directed her to the fire station and the Valley Children's Hospital down the street, and suggested she take the baby there".

One eyewitness reportedly saw the mother and told police she appeared so desperate to get rid of her baby girl that she was driving around Madera Ranchos, California early Monday morning asking people to take the newborn.

'Parents or persons with lawful custody can safely surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked, at designated safe drop-off sites.
