The march culminated at Azadi Square, where President Rouhani addressed the crowd. Marchers walked down the street chanting, "Death to Israel".

Iran's president also insisted that Iranians "have not asked and will not ask for permission" to develop different types of missiles, Rohani said.

The European Union has also criticized Iran over its "destabilizing" ballistic-missile program, its "hostile activities" in several EU member states, and its meddling in countries in the Middle East.

President Hassan Rohani blasted a USA "conspiracy" against Iran as the country marked the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that ended the monarchy and heralded the start of four decades of clerical rule.

In Washington, US National Security adviser John Bolton, who in 2017 expressed the hope that Iran's "revolution will not reach its 40th birthday", tweeted that after 40 years, the "Islamic Republic of Iran has failed to fulfil its promises to uphold and safeguard the rights of its citizens". It later broadcast footage showing crowds across the country of 80 million.

This year's anniversary comes as Iran deals with the aftermath of President Trump's decision in May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and restore tough US sanctions.

Soldiers, students, clerics and black-clad women holding small children thronged streets across Iran, many with portraits of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shi'ite cleric who toppled the Shah in an Islamic uprising that still haunts the West.

Today, as part of the jihad-exporting regime's celebration of the Islamic Revolution, the infamously anti-Semitic and anti-Israel government chose to once again casually threaten to attack the Jewish state.

Ayatollah Khamenei recently said when they chant "death to America" they really just mean death to President Donald Trump and his Cabinet.

Iran even holds an annual "Death to America" rally every November to commemorate the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in 1979, leading to a 444-day hostage crisis in which the Iranian regime held 52 Americans prisoner.
