Talks collapse on border deal as U.S. gov’t shutdown looms

As negotiations over a border security hit a snag, the White House on Sunday would not rule out another federal government shutdown even as it signaled a willingness to obtain funding for President Donald Trump's proposed wall by other means. "I think the next 24 hours are crucial".

A Democratic aide briefed on talks said the discussions "broke down" on Saturday after the Senate GOP rejected their position on limits for Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention beds in the interior of the country.

"The government shutdown is technically still on the table; we do not want it to come to that but that option is still open to the president and will remain so", Mulvaney told "Fox News Sunday" viewers.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee expressed concern Sunday that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III has not adequately scrutinized President Trump's finances and said House investigators plan to probe Trump's relationship with a bank implicated in Russian money laundering. "We could close some deals, but they've got to be good, to secure our borders", Shelby said. But this battle more than most is driven by political symbolism - whether Trump will be able to claim he delivered on his long-running pledge to "build the wall" or newly empowered congressional Democrats' ability to thwart him.

"I'm hoping we can get off the dime later today or in the morning", Mr. Shelby said.

"We were, you know, progressing well", Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga., said Sunday on ABC's "This Week".

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., who appeared on the same program, agreed that "We are not to the point where we can announce a deal".

Lawmakers could resort to a stopgap resolution with funding through September 30 if they can't get a deal, but acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said on "Fox News Sunday" that Trump "cannot sign everything they put in front of him".

Aides have since said that the term refers to when the president watches television, reads newspapers and does other work, according to Politico. "We will take as much money as you can give us and then we will go find money someplace else legally in order to secure that southern barrier". But Mulvaney also said that Trump was willing to explore funding alternatives. "I think it needs to be said again and again: all of this is going to be legal".

Following the longest partial government in USA history, which lasted a total of 35 days, a special bipartisan committee of 14 lawmakers from both the House and the Senate was formed to reach a deal on border security.

Since he ran for president in 2016, Trump has pledged to stop the influx of undocumented immigrants by building a wall on the border and crack down on immigrants living in the United States illegally by aggressively conducting more deportations.

Mulvaney told NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday that Trump likely wouldn't sign a new deal that fails to provide funding.

On Friday, some of the negotiators said that if Congress could not pass a border security bill by Friday, they would move to pass another stop-gap funding bill to avert a shutdown and allow more time to reach a border deal. How does he sign that?
