Just months after the show saw the departures of lead Andrew Lincoln and co-star Lauren Cohan, multiple reports Friday claimed Danai Gurira would be exiting the show following its 10th season.

Lincoln played show protagonist Rick Grimes since the pilot episode in 2010, but departed in the first half of the current season which ends in March.

Gurira joined the ragtag band of survivors as tough Michonne during season three. Her loss will be a big blow to the show's creative plans.

Gurira reprises her role as Michonne in The Walking Dead season 9's mid-season premiere, scheduled to air February 10 on AMC. "But we certainly would want her on the show as long as she wants to be on it", Madden said.

Her exit comes after what's been reported as "prolonged negotiations" with AMC, the company who produces the show, which is broadcast in Ireland on RTÉ 2. "She is an incredibly valuable character and I'm really hoping she stays", he added. "The goal is to have Danai continue on whatever basis she can make work, given the other things that she has going on in her life". It was probably only a matter of time before she left to focus on her own projects, which include writing and producing an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's hit novel Americanah into a limited series that will reunite her with Eclipsed star Lupita Nyong'o.
