Trump heading to border city of El Paso for campaign rally

The rally, announced Wednesday morning, February 6, provides Trump with an opportunity to make a public case before a friendly audience for his long-promised border wall - a demand that led to the 35-day shutdown that ended January 25.

"I expect to meet the Friday deadline", Representative Nita Lowey of NY, chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, said Wednesday.

Failure could result in another partial government closure, following the shutdown that began last December 22, when Trump refused to sign a funding bill that did not contain the money he wanted for wall construction to fulfill an often-repeated campaign promise.

Republicans offered mixed views on whether a deal can be done by Friday.

But Senator Richard Shelby (R:AL)., said the officials suggested a 3-pronged approach using barriers, technology and personnel.

Chuck Schumer addressed President Trump's claims in his State of the Union address that the United States has a "moral duty" to establish an immigration system that "protects the lives and jobs of our citizens".

Of course, President Trump's point was that El Paso's safe streets are entirely the product of a border wall and, of course, that isn't even close to being true. Democrats have rejected building a wall, though Lowey said that additional fencing is part of the talks.

Trump accepted no blame for his role in cultivating the rancorous atmosphere in the nation's capital, and he didn't outline a clear path for collaborating with Democrats who are eager to block his agenda. Also what they definitely thought was right or wrong with what only they guessed Trump might (or might not) say.

"They are not opposed to barriers", Blunt said about Democrats.

"We can probably get there on some sort of enhanced barriers with local input", said another negotiator, Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas. "We are talking about substance", Shelby said. The tone is good.

Republican Jon Barela (a former top aide to New Mexico Gov. Susan Martinez) tweeted, "President's message about El Paso is a lie". She said there has to be a trade-off between money for barriers and other areas of homeland security. But any lawmaker could demand a vote on overturning the president's decision, setting up a test of the president's power and his pull within the GOP.

Still, the President urged Congress to pass legislation to confront what he called "an urgent national crisis".

If Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader McConnell embrace a bi-partisan agreement, if it suits President Trump he will likely sign it.

"If it were me, I would have gone a little harder", said Pima County Republican Party Vice Chairman Chris King, at the Tucson "watch party". Trump will go to El Paso in person next week and argue that the wall solved their crime problem.

Lowey said, "Are you kidding me?" when asked whether she was going to the retreat.
