Trump and Pelosi have clashed since she took the leadership role in the House following the November election and especially so during the government shutdown.

The cameras closed in on former Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders during the 2019 State of the Union address.

The Democrat slammed the president for his role in the shutdown, which was the longest in US history, capping at 35 days, as she recalled volunteering on behalf of furloughed federal workers struggling without pay.

The president used the address to highlight what he sees as the accomplishments of his first two years in office, including a growing economy with just 4 percent unemployment, "the envy of the world", as he put it.

The most remarkable moment in President Trumps speech on the Unions state was, by our lights at least, his declaration in respect of socialism.

Trump is expected to focus much of his prime-time speech on dangers at the border with Mexico.

"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there can not be war and investigation", he declared. Nor does the GOP support the president's plan to declare a national emergency if Congress won't fund the wall.

A year ago, Trump made a similar plea for bread-breaking with Democrats, only to have the year swallowed up by scorched-earth congressional elections, a divisive fight over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and finally the 35-day government shutdown.

The announcement was made in Trump's prepared remarks the White House released for his Tuesday night State of the Union address. The three-year Korean War ended with an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

The House speaker traditionally introduces the president before he begins the speech. "All Americans can be proud that. exactly one century after the Congress passed the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, we also have more women serving in the Congress than ever before", he said. Tuesday's address may have been Trump's attempt to stop that from happening again.

The president ticked through a litany of issues with crossover appeal, including boosting infrastructure, lowering prescription drug costs and combating childhood cancer. We must come together to develop the solutions needed to move our country forward and improve the lives of all Americans.

Pelosi's interest in the papers caught the attention of many on social media, who wondered what she could be reading in the middle of Trump's address.

But then, even while the president may have to win over some unconvinced voters in 2020, he also will have to hold onto his base. But the president said his outreach to Pyongyang had made the USA safer.

In excerpts released ahead of Abrams' remarks, she calls the shutdown a political stunt that "defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people, but our values".

The president sought to sharpen some of the lines in the speech, and while aides urged him to congratulate Pelosi on her ascension to the speakership, they were not entirely clear that he would.

The Republican-led Senate this week broke with Trump on Syria and Afghanistan, passing a largely symbolic resolution that opposed a "precipitous withdrawal", insisting militants in both countries still pose a threat to the U.S.

Even among this pro-Trump audience, however, a majority said they did not think the President would succeed in increasing cooperation between Democrats and Republicans - 53% said Trump would not succeed in that effort, while 39% said that he would.
