While doing that, Trump mocked climate scientists by joking about global warming.

Citing the bad cold that has gripped the Midwest, Trump taunted the phenomenon of global warming asking it to "come back fast" in his tweet. "People can't last outside even for minutes", he tweeted this afternoon. His tweet late Monday wondering "What the hell is going on with Global Warming" drew a quick response from Wisconsin Rep. Mark Pocan. "Please come back fast, we need you!"

Taking the sunny view that Trump-loving areas in line for rising seas, brutal droughts, and other climate havoc are rational actors who might be convinced to support progressive notions of how to mitigate the dangers, the authors write that "the current gridlock might not be as permanent as it now seems". As he noted, "Trump's climate-trolling is such obvious outrage bait that you nearly want to ignore it, but it's also self-provided evidence of one of the most significant ignorance crises of his presidency, so I dunno".

"Winter storms don't prove that global warming isn't happening", the NOAA tweet said, linking to a 2015 article on Climate.gov which explains that "warmer air temperatures fuel more evaporation, leading to a wetter atmosphere, which increases rain or snow totals".

The Democrat responded by saying: "Only a moron would not understand global warming causes huge temperature swings". Trump tweeted on Monday night.

"Climate isn't a day, climate is long term", Myers said, as he also pointed out that the pre-Thanksgiving cold snap that the President was tweeting about at the time was mainly concentrated on just one part of North America and not over the whole world.

The fact we are seeing record cold does not contradict climate research.

Although the Republican president's tweet was liked 51k times, it also left his critics irked and they slammed him for not knowing the difference between climate and weather.

Parts of the United States are indeed facing some of the coldest temperatures the country's seen in a generation.
