Rumor mill: Motorola could be bringing back the Razr flip-phone as a smartphone with folding capabilities.

Lenovo will soon make a push to cash in on the distinguished Razr name, with a report from The Wall Street Journal detailing a partnership between the device's maker and Verizon to sell a new foldable Razr phone in the USA as early as February. A new The Wall Street Journal report says the phone will cost $1,500 (about £1,170, AU$2,010) and come with a foldable display.

Chinese phone maker Royole announced its FlexPai foldable smartphone toward the end of 2018, but it's still in the pre-order phase today.

"So hopefully what you just described [the Motorola Razr brand] will be developed or realized very soon". Unlike the original Motorola Razr, the newer variant could make use of flexible display technology.

Motorola sounded the death knell when it sold its cellphone business to Google in 2011 and, later, when Lenovo bought Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014. As the company is reportedly looking to manufacture over 200,000 units, it must believe consumers will pay the high price tag to try out a first-gen foldable smartphone and own the next Razr phone.

Motorola is planning to revive it's Razr brand which once sat on the throne for one of the most iconic and stylish phones in the market.

That launch time may mean we're set to hear details of the new phone at MWC 2019 as it's set to kick off on February 25.

However, the new Razr design didn't take off and generated only lacklustre sales. For all the talk of foldable screens coming to major phones, manufacturers like Samsung have been extremely reticent to actually show off their concept designs. Samsung wasn't far behind, releasing a new folding smartphone shortly after.

As with 5G, foldable phones are expected to be a niche market in 2019.
