Keen followers of the Tour know the 25-year-old greenhorn won The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic about a year ago and leveraged that into a PGA TOUR card.

"The first hole today, I tapped in with the flagstick [in the hole], and I didn't feel right doing that", he continued. If not, he could have dropped again from the proper height.

Former world number one Adam Scott said on Wednesday that he would play only WGC events that fitted his schedule, and that this year none of them were in his plans.

It was an eventful day for Spieth beyond his brushes with the new rules, as he struggled with his ball-striking and his putting on his way to a 3-over 73.

He caught himself from dropping shoulder-height behind the 18th green.

Putnam needed just 23 putts, making 12 of 12 from 10 feet and rolling in birdie putts of 27, 21 and 28 feet during his round. "But I just got hot with the putter and just rode the wave". Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., and Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., are even.

Fabregas completes move from Chelsea to Monaco, reunites with Henry
After returning to the Camp Nou, the 110 times-capped former Spanish global won one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Fifa Club World Cup.

That left the Australian tied for seventh but five shots behind surprise leader Adam Svensson of Canada. This is his third year playing the Sony Open, so the course is not new to him.

Although limited practice time as he enjoyed his wedding and honeymoon mean he isn't sure just what to expect this week, he said he thought the break did him good.

Putnam was stung on his foot while poolside on Tuesday and had to pull out of the pro-am because it was painful to walk.

"Honestly it's like a frustrating asterisk that I have to pick it up and re-drop from your knee", he said on the eve of the opening round at the Sony Open.

"I putted really well last week (in the Sentry Tournament of Champions), was No. 2 overall in the field, and it just carried over". Statistically, he made just over 174 feet of putts, from a 5-footer on the closing hole (his shortest birdie putt) to his longest birdie on the 14th at just under 30 feet.

"The hole was very large and the ball was going in", Putnam said.
