Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Says She Will Run For President In 2020

Gabbard will become the first Hindu to run for the White House when she announces formally next week. Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA has already formed an exploratory committee and is moving quickly with trips across early primary states.

Within minutes of the news that Gabbard is mounting a presidential campaign, the Republican National Committee (RNC) blasted out a press release detailing her potential vulnerabilities.

Former Obama administration housing chief Julian Castro plans to announce his run for the presidency this weekend.

According to Gabbard, 37, her campaign would primarily focus on "the issue of war and peace".

In 2004, she volunteered for a 12-month tour of duty in Iraq while serving in the Hawaii Army National Guard, leaving her seat as a state legislator to do so.

Gabbard, who served in the USA military herself and is an Iraq War veteran, stunned her party and the Washington establishment in 2017 when she made an independent trip to Syria and met the country's leader Bashar al-Assad, who the U.S. regards as a sworn enemy. "Will you join me?" she asked on Twitter.

Gabbard was born in American Samoa to a Catholic father, Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard, and her mother, Carol Porter Gabbard, is of Caucasian descent who professes Hinduism. "I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement".

Gabbard backs domestic policy items such as Medicare for All and a Green New Deal, and she garnered praise and notoriety for resigning from her post as vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to endorse Sen.

Gabbard is so far left that she lost the support of a Hawaii teacher's union over her handling of Syria. In recent weeks, she has worked to expand her fundraising network and to improve her standing among critical voting blocs, including African-American voters.

She listed access to health care, criminal justice reform and climate change as key issues. She also noted that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was based on faulty intelligence and said that she wanted to understand the evidence of the Syria attack.

The 2020 presidential primary cycle is scheduled to kick off from the Iowa Caucuses on February 3, 2020, followed by the New Hampshire Primary on February 11, Nevada caucus of February 15 and SC on February 22.

Rania Batrice, a former deputy campaign manager for Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign, will be Gabbard's campaign manager, CNN said.

Last year, Gabbard came under intense criticism - including from some Democrats - for traveling to that country and meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose government lawmakers have accused of war crimes and even genocide during that country's brutal civil war. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX) are also reportedly considering running for president.
