Despite being rushed to UC Davis Medical Center for emergency treatment, she later died from her wounds.

During her swearing-in ceremony, Merced Corona pinned a badge on his smiling daughter's uniform and was quoted as saying that Natalie is excited to join the force and is dedicated to the profession.

He said the suspect took aim at officer Corona after riding up to the scene of the crash on his bicycle, hiding in the shadows.

At 1 am officers entered the home and found the suspect dead of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.

"She was a rising star in the department", Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said.

"She just worked like you can't believe", Pytel said about Corona.

"He shot her once, and she went down to the ground, and he then ended up shooting her multiple times", Pytel said, adding that the initial attack came from Corona's side. She'd started patrolling the streets on her own a few weeks ago.

Inside the department, Corona's coworkers spent the day sharing their memories of her.

Davis police Officer Natalie Corona, 22, who graduated from a training academy and completed her field training just before Christmas, had responded to a three-car crash when she was shot, the newspaper reported.

"Natalie was just full of life and full of energy and just an absolute pleasure to be around", Pytel said. "I've spoken to her parents and I can tell you that this is just been devastating".

In 2016, Corona posted a photo of herself on Facebook wearing a blue dress and a "thin blue line" United States flag that honors law enforcement officers.

The shooting occurred while Corona responded to a routine auto collision in downtown Davis.

Corona is the first law-enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in Yolo County since June 15, 2008, when Yolo County sheriff's Deputy Jose "Tony" Diaz was gunned down after pursuing a suspected drunk driver in rural Dunnigan.

"I've heard her described by our officers tonight as our daughter, our friend, and just a sister that we all wanted".

Investigators say it appears he shot himself. Davis firefighters on duty at the downtown station responded immediately and began lifesaving effort before her transport to the University of California, Davis Medical Center.

Lyssa Nicole, who trained Corona at the police academy, said the officer loved helping people and protecting people. Now, the community is comforting her family in this time of grief.

The suspect - described only as a white male in his 20s - had no prior criminal record or history of violence, according to police officials who spoke at the news conference.

There is "significant amount of video" from Corona's in-car camera, which continued to run as the shooting investigation and manhunt unfolded, but it has not yet downloaded due to its length, according to Pytel.

"I was sitting on my couch last night and I heard the sirens go by and I thought, this is Davis, it's a minor deal", he said.
