Padraig Harrington chosen as Europe captain for 2020 Ryder Cup

PADRAIG HARRINGTON has admitted the prospect of leading Europe at the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits is both a thrilling and daunting prospect. "Because you are putting it on the line when you become a Ryder Cup captain", Harrington said.

The appointment of the three-time major champion, 47, was announced in a news conference at Wentworth on Tuesday.

Harrington, of Ireland, was a vice captain on the past three European teams, victories at Gleneagles in 2014 and Le Golf National in 2018 and a loss at Hazeltine in 2016.

Harrington is the third Irish captain of the Europe team in the last four stagings of the match.

"Obviously I'm thrilled", said the three-time major victor. I suppose you could look at this as being a natural progression, you move on from player to Vice Captain to Captain, but it's not something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation.

"It's something I thought long and hard about".

"I will definitely take bits from all of them".

"I think what they are really saying is that they liked what they saw and they would like a continuation of what they have seen and not to rock the boat too much".

He has got great experience in the USA, so he won't be intimidated.

Crucially, Bjorn knew exactly what he wanted and selected players accordingly.

Harrington has been encouraged by what he said was the "unanimous" support of Europe's players.

While latterly he has brought his extensive experience to the role of vice-captain in the past three editions of the biennial contest. However, Harrington will know the alternate-shot format is an area where his men can gain an advantage.
